During the months of October through May, the Geological Society of Minnesota (GSM) sponsors a series of seminars by leading professionals in the fields of geology and Earth science. These exciting seminars are free and open to the public, and are especially valuable for enthusiastic learners, from secondary-school students to professionals. A question and answer opportunity is always included. (Where else can you enjoy an intriguing exchange with a leading scientist or educator, for free?) The seminars are sometimes theme-related within the season, and are generally presented on alternating Monday evenings at 7:30 P.M. on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota.
Several laboratory sessions that are designed to demonstrate the ideas and principles of geology and other Earth sciences are regularly offered on some remaining Monday evenings during this season. These labs are also free and open to the public, and allow a valuable HANDS-ON learning experience for beginners or a helpful refresher for the seasoned enthusiast. Question and answer opportunities are always abundant and group discussion is common. (Where else can you actively practice science, under expert guidance, for free?) Advanced registration may be required for some labs as space or equipment may be limited. The labs are held either on local college campuses, or at area industrial or government facilities.
The specific building and room number of seminars and labs are noted on the SEEK calendar, the GSM web site: http://www.gsmn.org (and click on WINTER LECTURES), or may be obtained by calling GSM at (612) 724-2101.
Seminars and labs may provide CEUs for teachers.
