In 2010, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency published a study Digging Deep Through School Trash, which identified that almost 24 percent of the total waste generated at schools is from food waste. With that knowledge, the Jeffers Foundation partnered with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to create the Waste Reduction Awareness Program (WRAP).
WRAP is a free program designed to make it easy for schools to find ways to reduce waste in their lunchrooms. WRAP has an easy-to-use web-based guide to help schools identify sensible opportunities to reduce waste and save money. Waste prevention is always the most environmentally friendly way to deal with waste. A 30-question self-assessment, case studies of schools that have successfully implemented the WRAP, and resources for improving your program are available at http://www.jeffersfoundation.org/wrap.php
