Description:

Urban and rural communities across the United States are showing interest in the strategy for economic well-being called sustainable development. This concept involves deliberate efforts to ensure that community development not only enhances the local economy, but also the local environment and quality of life.

To help communities design and implement this vibrant new approach to planning, the U.S. Department of Energy has created the Smart Communities Network, formerly named the Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development. This service will assist communities throughout the United States by providing world-class consultation and information on sustainable development. The service reflects the U.S. Department of Energy's emphasis on creating communities that
incorporate energy efficiency as part of an overall sustainable
development strategy. Federal, state, and local agencies that assist community developers are also our target customers.
