Description:

ENGAGING! FREE! FUN!

RiverXchange is an innovative program that combines a year-long water resources curriculum with class partnerships through social networking technology. New Mexico fifth graders are partnered with "high tech pen pals" in another part of the U.S. (including Minnesota) or world to share what they are learning about critical water resources issues relating to their local river. Students learn about The Big Water Questions and must decide for themselves what they can do to protect local water resources.

This one-of-a kind, 5th grade program provides a rich multi-disciplinary learning experience for your students throughout the school year. The RiverXchange curriculum integrates standards-based science, social studies, and math lessons with essential writing skills to teach important water resources issues.

  • Students become high-tech pen pals with a class in New Mexico, USA.
  • Each class follows the RiverXchange curriculum to learn about their local river and watershed.
  • Students "blog" about what they are learning on a private wiki website throughout the school year to reinforce learning & improve writing skills.
  • Classes participate in field a local field trip, collect water quality data, & meet in-class guest speakers.
  • We provide training and technical support for you!
  • RiverXchange is produced by New Mexico-based Orilla Consulting, LLC, owned by Amy White, who has managed the program since its inception. RiverXchange was developed in 2007 by Experiential EE, LLC and Illinois-based National Great Rivers Research and Education Center with just two class partnerships. The program has grown from two partnerships in 2008 to 66 partnerships in 2012, all thanks to funding from New Mexico water resources agencies and in-kind contributions from dozens of organizations!
