Post Date: September 11, 2019
Resource Type:
  • Book | Magazine
Description:

This soil atlas covers two areas in northeastern Minnesota. The International Falls sheet covers about 2,053,000 acres, extending from 48 degrees N latitude to the Canada-Minnesota border and between 92 and 94 degrees W longitude (includes northern St. Louis County and the central and northeastern portions of Koochiching County). The Two Harbors sheet covers about 3,063,000 acres, extending from the Canada-Minnesota border south to 47 degrees N latitude and Lake Superior and between 92 degrees W longitude and Lake Superior (includes all of Lake and Cook counties and the easternmost portion of St. Louis County). Provides essential info for broad planning, such as determining areas suitable for various crops to enable processors to locate plants in areas of greatest potential; determining areas' potential for various types of farming, forestry or recreation; determining areas that would benefit from drainage or irrigation; locating sources of sand and gravel; preparing wildlife density maps; locating pulp and lumber mills in areas of greatest supply; and locating feasible routes for utility lines and highways. More detailed surveys should be used for specific planning of farms, cities, recreation areas, tax equalization and road building. 16 tables describe features of soil landscapes in the geomorphic areas
within the International Falls and Two Harbors sheets. Discusses development
of the areas' landforms as well as their climate, forestry and recreation.
10 color, 13 b/w photos. Includes 2 separate color maps that show the
geomorphic regions and soil landscapes within the International Falls and Two
Harbors sheets. For engineers, regional planners, development agencies,
government personnel, businesses and industries, and junior high
, senior high and college science teachers.
