What is an Envirothon?
It's a problem solving natural resources competition for both Junior High (grades 6-8) and Senior High (grades 9-12) students. Students are tested on their knowledge of Minnesota's natural resources - Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and a current environmental issue that changes from year to year (selected by the North American Envirothon).
Both Senior and Junior High students will visit 5 different learning stations, and answer 20 questions at each station. Senior High teams will also visit a sixth station, where they will give a 10-minute oral presentation on a specific scenario, to a panel of judges. The oral presentation scenario is developed before the actual event, so students can prepare visual aids, and other props to assist their presentation. Power point presentations are not allowed, due to lack of electricity.
Who participates in the Metro Area Envirothon?
For the Metro Area Envirothon, teams from the following Counties in Minnesota are eligible to participate in the event: Anoka, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Scott, Sherburne, Washington, Wright.
Teams of 5 students from the same school or organization (i.e. 4-H group) can participate. You can have either a Junior Envirothon team (grades 6-8), or a Senior Envirothon team (grades 9-12), or BOTH! Schools or organizations are allowed to bring more than one team, if there is space available. Each school must have an adult advisor in attendance at the event.
The top 3 teams from the Senior Envirothon will advance to the Minnesota State Envirothon, held the third Monday in May. Currently, there is no state competition for the Junior Envirothon teams.
When & Where is the Metro Area Envirothon?
The Metro Area Envirothon is held annually in May at the U of M Landscape Arboretum in Chaska.
Why an Environmental Competition?
The Envirothon teachers the students about our environment, and how they can become more involved in protecting our natural resources now as students, and later as adults. It also teaches them teamwork. Students representing their school/organization compete as a five-member team. They must cooperate with one another in order to collectively come up with the solution for the correct answers in each of the five tests.
Schools and teachers across the Country are recognizing the value of the Envirothon as a means of strengthening the environmental awareness of students.
How can I get my School or Organization involved?
