Lead is a toxic metal that, in sufficient quantities, has adverse effects on the nervous and reproductive systems of mammals and birds. Found in most fishing jigs and sinkers, this metal is poisoning wildlife, including loons and eagles.

However, there are inexpensive alternatives to traditional lead tackle. Anglers can now use sinkers and jigs made from non-poisonous materials such as tin, bismuth, steel, and tungsten-nickel alloy -- and they can find them on the Internet and at established sporting goods retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target and Cabela's. In the case of sinkers, Cabela's has found steel sinkers to outperform lead due to its hardness and resistance to deformation.

For more information on the risks of lead to wildlife, as well as tips for anglers and links to over a dozen web sites of tackle manufacturers and retailers, visit http://www.pca.state.mn.us/index.php/living-green/living-green-citizen/household-hazardous-waste/nontoxic-tackle-lets-get-the-lead-out.html
