Join our Summer Camp STEM Education team as a Level 1 Instructor. The purpose of this position is to advance the mission of the Science Museum of Minnesota by delivering science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs to museum audiences. This position provides creative support for the development of program materials, curricula, and instruction to enhance our brand of facilitated learning experiences. In addition, this role supports implementation of program logistics (material and classroom management, registration process, schedules, and client support). This position will be assigned to work both onsite at the Science Museum in Saint Paul and online to support virtual camps.

This is a seasonal position that runs through the fall of 2021. 

Work Environment: Temporarily remote work from home to be assessed every 3 months in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, office setting onsite. Work both indoors in classroom settings and outdoors in all climate types, surrounded by more than 100+ children. Deliver programming both onsite and offsite, with occasional weekends and evenings.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Deliver programs and instruct learners from multiple audiences including large groups and small groups, in formal and informal settings, pre-school to young adult ages, using best practices to guide and facilitate learning.
  • Encourage participants' engagement and enthusiasm in program activities by modeling behavior expectations and help create a positive learning environment.
  • Use appropriate strategies when working with learners with special needs and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Revise and annotate curricula for learning experiences based on best practices in STEM education in support of diverse audiences of learners.
  • Participate in an iterative development process to generate, evaluate, improve, and document new activities for use in STEM Education programming.
  • Participate in professional development, mentor youth staff when appropriate, share ideas with the broader STEM Education team, and collaborate on common work efforts.
  • Contribute to a positive internal culture within STEM Education by collaborating with other Instructors on common work and maintaining an understanding of best practices for STEM education.
  • Maintain curricula, instructor resources, and materials documentation for the delivery of STEM Education programming.
  • Take care of shared resources such as educational materials, equipment, and classrooms.
  • Communicate with program participants while serving as a representative of the museum, including participating in research and evaluation efforts (observations, surveys, etc).
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with museum staff and external partners.
  • Cultivate new, unique, and interesting ideas in support of development, design, or creation of cutting edge educational experiences.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • No formal education necessary.
  • Documented experience facilitating informal/formal learning experiences for a range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of research and implementation of STEM equity and inclusion best practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of STEM trends, practices, and standards for local and state initiatives.
  • Applied knowledge of age-appropriate content and pedagogy for preschool, school-age, and family audiences.
  • Ability to speak and write English clearly and fluently and convey information effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in Google Suites.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for creativity, curiosity, passion, enthusiasm, integrity and a strong professional ethic.
  • Documented ability to come up with unusual or clever ideas about a given topic or situation, or to develop creative ways to solve a problem.
  • Documented ability to contribute in educational team settings.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).

Hiring Pay Range: $17.00 USD or more per hour / Depending on Qualifications.
