SEASONAL WATER EDUCATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES TECHNICIAN
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
LOCATION: Washington Conservation District (WCD) – Oakdale, MN
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal Technician
SALARY RANGE: $15-17/hr DOQ HOURS: 10-40 per week, including some evenings and weekends
STATUS: Seasonal, non-exempt TERM: Spring-Fall, 2022. Flexible start and end dates.
The Washington Conservation District is seeking a talented, self-motivated individual to assist with watershed education, community engagement, volunteer coordination, landscape restoration, and water resource management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
• Planning and conducting educational programming at community events, including Washington County Fair
• Helping to conduct listening sessions and a farm tour, in conjunction with Big River Farms (a nonprofit organization that works with immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC farmers)
• Supporting education to and audience research with HOAs (homeowner associations) related to stormwater management practices
• Working with volunteers to complete landscape restoration projects, including planting and maintaining raingardens, and managing invasive species
• Assisting with other educational activities, including: developing newsletters and special mailings, promoting events and activities, and meeting with landowners to discuss habitat and landscape restoration projects.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Qualified applicants will possess, or be actively pursuing a degree in environmental studies, natural resources management, environmental education, or similar. Environmental education experience. An understanding of nonpoint source water pollution. Self-motivated, able to complete projects on schedule, and comfortable working with diverse audiences that include urban and rural residents from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Effective communication and public speaking skills, in both formal and informal situations. Good computer skills. Must have valid driver's license and good driving record.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with software and communications platforms, including: Microsoft Office suite, Squarespace or WordPress, and social media. Beneficial skills and experience include: writing, graphic design, social media, survey design, and event planning. A working knowledge about native plants and gardening techniques is also preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves 60-70% indoor work with regular activities outside of the office. Physical activities include lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis; occasional strenuous landscaping activities; exposures not limited to heat and wet conditions. Office work includes frequent interruptions and diverse daily activities. Office equipment used includes telephone, computer, and copy machine. Weekly hours may vary throughout the position, depending on applicant availability and work load.
