Assist MPCA research scientists working on poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in lakes and rivers with the following tasks:
- Sample collection (fish, water, sediment)
- Develop and test new sample collection methods
- Preparation of samples for laboratory analysis (e.g., fish weight and length, fillet, and tissue homogenization)
- Coordinate sample shipping and laboratory communications
- Compile data in spreadsheets, maintain electronic files
- Conduct mapping and descriptive statistics of PFAS data
- Conduct online scientific literature reviews and prepare annotated lists of relevant publications
Minimum Qualifications
Incumbent must be enrolled in a science related program for a 2-year associates or 4-year bachelor’s degree with two years of course work in environmental science, biology, chemistry, toxicology, water resources science, or related subject area.
AND
Ability to work in a team setting
Good written and oral communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word and Excel)
Able to independently conduct field and lab activities, with supervision from MPCA staff
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework in statistics, chemistry, fish biology, aquatic ecology, chemical fate and transport
Knowledge of boat and water safety
Physical Requirements
Be able to perform field work associated with monitoring projects. This includes driving a motor pool vehicle, carrying equipment to sites, and portaging canoes. Ability to perform lab work including weighing and measuring fish, filleting fish, and homogenizing fish. Frequently may need to lift and carry approximately 50 pounds in the water or over land. Should be capable of moderate physical exertion in summer conditions.
Driver’s License Requirements
A driver’s license is an essential function of this position. This requires possession of an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License. The job offer is contingent on confirmation of a valid driver’s license AND a satisfactory DLR check.
Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pounds.
