Purpose
The Seasonal Educator & Events Coordinator position is two-fold. The primary responsibility will be delivering educational programming to Eagle Bluff’s Nature Preschool (ages 3-5) and Eagle Bluff’s Outdoor School (grades 4-8) adventure education classes. In addition, they will be responsible for coordinating and co-facilitating Eagle Bluff’s public events and programs for families.
Organization Overview
Founded in 1978, Eagle Bluff is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in rural southeastern Minnesota, just a few miles from the small historic town of Lanesboro in Fillmore County. As a year-round environmental learning center, we provide accredited education programs to over 16,000 children, adults, and families each year in our Outdoor School, Summer Camps, college j-terms, public programs, and Nature Preschool.
Eagle Bluff’s newest education program is a Nature Preschool, which is a partnership with Semcac Head Start. Our kindergarten readiness program for children ages 3-5 uses environmental education to support the development of the whole child. We piloted the preschool with just Head Start students during the 2020-2021 school year. For the 2021-2022 school year, we are expanding enrollment to include 7-10 non-Head Start students.
Summary
Eagle Bluff is seeking a highly collaborative outdoor educator to share their passion for the outdoors with individuals of all ages through Eagle Bluff’s Nature Preschool, Outdoor School, and Public Programs.
The Seasonal Educator will work closely with the Nature Preschool Educator and the Head Start Education team to design and facilitate outdoor experiences that align with the curriculum. Our Nature Preschool aims to nurture a child’s relationship with the outdoors through play, trail walks, games, off-trail exploration, animal encounters, song, and art.
In addition, the Seasonal Educator will be one of twenty-two Education Department members that facilitates adventure education programming for our accredited Outdoor School. In these ropes courses, group challenges, and other adventure classes, we aim to provide students with experiences that foster a sense of respect, stewardship and community; impart life skills such as teamwork and problem-solving; and promote positive outdoor experiences.
Lastly, under the guidance of the Education Director, this position is responsible for coordinating and co-facilitating Eagle Bluff’s family-oriented public programs. Seasonal events include but are not limited to: Trick-or-Treetops, Summer High Ropes, Seasonal Festivals, and Becoming an Outdoor Family.
An ideal candidate will have a variety of life experiences, patience, sense of humor, and comfort in the natural world. A typical work week is 40 hours.
Essential Functions
Nature Preschool | 35%
- Co-teach outdoor exploration activities (on and off trail) to groups of no more than 20 children in mixed age classes of 3-5 two to four mornings per week
- Approach teaching as a facilitator/guide, allowing children to take the lead
- Help create an environment of joy, appreciation, and wonder through words, actions, and presence
- Foster problem solving, collaboration, confidence building and imagination by providing just enough scaffolded assistance to children
- Collaborate with lead Nature Preschool Educator in preparing environments and materials to support learning opportunities
Outdoor School | 40%
- Teach adventure education classes, such as high ropes courses and team building for Eagle Bluff’s Outdoor School students, primary ages 4th-8th grade three to five classes per week
- Co-lead one to three evening campfires per month
- Set-up and clean-up of classes; inventory class supplies and kits
- Demonstrate professionalism and show sincerity/sensitivity especially in areas of participant experience
- Be flexible and maintain a positive attitude and composure when working alone/in teams, receiving constructive criticism, and during times of stress
Event Coordination | 25%
- Behind-the-scenes planning and coordination of Eagle Bluff’s public programs, such as creating event registration pages, answering questions from guests, and communicating event needs to other departments
- Clearly communicate program set-up, facilitation, and clean-up needs to staff who are working the event
- Work up to one weekend a month, facilitating events

Minimum Qualifications & Skills

- High school diploma or GED
- 1 year teaching experience, any setting
- Ability to develop and foster relationships with coworkers, students, and chaperones
- Willing to operate and participate in adventure activities such as: high ropes courses, rock wall, etc.
- Strong leadership skills: Communication, self-motivation, flexibility, enthusiasm, collaboration
- Be flexible and willing to assist with a variety of teaching and administrative duties
- Be able to create a culturally responsive, inclusive environment for children and their families
- Current Adult and Child CPR/First Aid certification by start date
- Has up to date driver’s license
- Comfortable in moving water and able to hike long distances
- Computer, radio, and audio-visual equipment literacy
- Ability to pass a background check
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- 1 year teaching experience in outdoor education
- Demonstrate working knowledge of hazards and risk assessment as related to the environments of young children
- Knowledge of B.E.E.T.L.E.S. techniques
- General knowledge of the natural world and outdoor recreation
- Have prior experience facilitating high ropes and team building challenge courses
- Experience planning and coordinating events
Compensation:
- $29,097 annual salary
- Daily lunch provided when groups are in residence
- 15 days of PTO, 7 paid holidays, and 5 floating holidays
- The option to receive health insurance and/or participation in a medical expense plan (HSA)
- Retirement accrual @ 4% of gross pay

Communication, detecting, traversing, and operating skills are needed. The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically require:
- Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines; using measurement devices
- Constant movement and use of limbs including but not limited to typing, hauling, bending, pushing, and pulling
- Frequent traversing to a significant degree (2+ miles) up/down hills and remaining stationary for extended periods of time (3+ hours)
- Frequent facilitation of high ropes courses; including but not limited to operating 30 ft. off the ground, traversing cables, lifting of participants on course, and ziplining
- Frequent communication (speaking and hearing) and information exchange in person and digitally on computers, phones, and radios. Conversing with individuals up to audiences of 200+; occasionally in noisy environments
- Frequent interaction with non-living and living creatures not limited to birds, insects, reptiles
- Frequent exposure to weather elements, such as low and high temperatures, precipitation, wind
- Occasional moving of 50-70 pound objects such as 60-pound canoes
- Occasionally operating power tools such as drills, impact wrenches, or sanders
- Occasionally driving vehicles on and off-road, including but not limited to UTVs, trucks, and trailers
