Job Description

Role Summary: Seasonal position performing work in the care and management of Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) landscapes, specifically the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary. Assists in maintenance of horticultural specimens including trees, shrubs, perennial wildflowers, grasses, ferns, sedges and other plants; as well as trails and hardscapes in a naturalistic setting focused on the curation of native plants. Works under the direction of the Garden Curator, and in collaboration with other MPRB staff from Environmental Stewardship, Maintenance, and the Wildflower Garden to provide a safe, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing garden environment for visitors.   

Work season & schedule:  May 24, 2021 – August 13, 2021. Typical work schedule: 32 hours a week, Monday-Thursday 8am-4:30pm.           

May work an altered work week on occasion that may include days, nights, holidays and weekends.  

Essential Duties: 

  • Assist and support MPRB Garden Curator and Natural Resources Specialist with care and management of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary’s 15-acres of naturalistic garden areas, trails, and hardscapes 
  • Maintain park landscapes including trails, gardens and grounds to established standards, protocols and Wildflower Garden-specific management plan 
  • Perform gardening activities including seeding, planting, watering, mulching, weeding, pruning, mowing, line trimming, aerating, maintaining plant health, and related tasks 
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of Garden buildings, including Visitor Shelter and bathrooms 
  • Assist with environmental education programs (training provided) under the direction of Environmental Education Lead (as needed) 

Skills and Ability to: 

  • Follow written and oral instructions with attention to detail 
  • Meet Garden project deadlines on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis 
  • Follow specified procedures in performing single or multi-task assignments 
  • Maintain a respectful and professional demeanor with co-workers, volunteers and the public at all times 
  • Operate utility vehicle and other motor vehicles 
  • Operate mower, line trimmer, chainsaw, log splitter, pruning shears, shovel (but not limited to these) 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • College coursework in one or more of the following disciplines: horticultural sciences, ecology, biology, natural resources, botany, earth sciences or landscape architecture 
  • Current enrollment in college level coursework 

Compensation:  Starting at $13.75 per hour. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.
