4-H Youth Development in Hennepin and Ramsey Counties are looking for an experienced youth program leader to oversee 3 summer camps and 4-H programs! This person will:
- Oversee the planning and implementation of 4-H summer camps in entirety, including but not limited to:
- June 19-23 : 4-H Campus Immersion
University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus
- July 17-21: Urban Explorers 4-H Day Camp
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, Minneapolis
- August 7-11: 4-H Camp Voyageur
Voyageur Environmental Center, Mound, MN
- Others, as assigned
- Execute safe and quality educational experiences
- Commit to summer fundraising initiatives
- Provide leadership and mentorship to camp counselor team(s), including facilitating intensive counselor training sessions
Hourly Rate:
The rate of pay is dependent on undergraduate student status, $15*-17+ / hour
*hourly rate for students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
Hours per week:
- There are approximately 300 hours available for this position between April and August
- May : approximately 4 hours/week (for counselor selection)
- June - August: approximately 20-40 hours per week, pending program schedule
- Preparation before camp includes but is not limited to: meetings with 4-H staff, DEI workshops, camp counselor training, and activity planning
- All programs are in-person, preparation and planning meetings may be virtual; remote work options are available when not in on-site, in-person programs
- On-site & overnight for the entirety of camp programs, which include 4-H Campus Immersion (June 19-23) and 4-H Camp Voyageur (August 7-11)

Job Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, plan, and facilitate 4-H summer camp programs; establish a welcoming and safe learning environment for all camp programs; plan special events (including family orientation night, field trips, etc)
- Recruitment of youth members for camp, including innovative and effective communications to youth and families, especially those not previously engaged in 4-H
- Oversee camp counselors team
- Plan and facilitate training sessions for teen counselors
- Co-create & implement content for teen counselors to deliver at camp programs
- Supervise camp counselors in all activity areas
- Provide evaluation & feedback
- Develop and assist in program activity schedule, oversee camp participant roster, and lead emergency responses if needed
- Enforce camp policies and regulations; model standards for conduct as they pertain to camp staff and campers
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in all interactions with campers, counselors, camp staff members, volunteers and parents; Implement programs that engage diverse backgrounds, interests and learning styles
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years old by June 15 to comply with UMN Safety of Minors policies regarding residential (overnight) supervision.
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Completion of a post secondary degree is preferred.
- Experience: Experience working with diverse youth and/or youth development experience is required. Experience with program management and leadership is required. At least 2 years experience working with and on behalf of youth in a summer camp setting. Completion of CPR and/or first aid training is required by June 15.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: The ability to organize and motivate youth while nurturing positive youth development, decision making, responsibility, and leadership is required. An interest/skill in working with young people and adults is required. Good problem-solving skills, conflict resolution skills, and a solid understanding of risk management is required, as well as cultural competency and a commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
- Transportation: Must have access to reliable transportation. Camps take place across the Minneapolis / St Paul area. Mileage reimbursement available.
- A willingness to become familiar with and work within the philosophy and guidelines of University of Minnesota Extension, the Minnesota 4-H program, and the local 4-H program
Additional Requirements/Working Conditions:
- Must complete all required trainings, including but not limited to Safety of Minors and Civil Rights training.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends and be on-site point person during residential camp programs
- Must have the ability to lift, carry, pull, and push 20 pounds.
- Must be able to stand for 90 minutes at a time and sit for 90 minutes at a time. Some days will require hours of standing or sitting.
- Must complete University of Minnesota payroll paperwork, including completing an in-person I-9 (identification verification process) and have a successful completion of a background check prior to the first day of work.
