Successful implementation of waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting in schools brings many rewards, including potential cost savings for tight school budgets. Through a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Utility Services Solid Waste Management Grant, the Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) provided technical assistance and training about waste reduction, recycling, and composting to rural schools in Connecticut, New York, and Delaware. Eight schools participated in the Waste Reduction and Recycling project over the course of two years.
Several resources were developed to support waste reduction, recycling, and composting in the schools and are made available on their website as free pdf documents at http://www.nerc.org/documents/schools/schools.html
Posted resources include Case Studies for the eight participating schools, Tip Sheets on topics including school waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting, Paper Use Reduction in Schools and School Cafeteria Waste Reduction. Also two PowerPoint presentations that can be used by schools: Rural School Recycling Success and Composting at School, as well as presentations from NERC's school Webinars.
