The stratosphere is the Earth's radiation shield. And it is where 90% of ozone is concentrated. This 'ozone layer' protects us from the sun's ultraviolet rays. Scientists have discovered that there is a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. In this video, we follow some leading scientists to their year-round lab on Antarctica and learn how they study the fluctuations in the ozone layer. We learn that the primary culprit for the ozone's destruction is chorine which can be traced to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The chemical interactions that happen in the atmosphere between the ozone molecule and CFCs are explained. This video also walks the viewer through a history of the discovery of ozone gas and the invention and uses of CFCs to their present day environmental impacts. (1994)
