Description:

Overview
Timber frames to wood-fired bread baking, northern ecology to blacksmithing - the traditional crafts of the North and the joy of hands-on learning are the hallmarks of North House Folk School. Year-round courses exploring nineteen different themes feature the collective talents of 100-plus regional artisans. Workshops range in length from 4 hours to two weeks. The school's campus includes two historic buildings and multiple timbered classrooms, all situated on Lake Superior and the harbor in Grand Marais, MN.

Mission and Goals
North House Folk School's mission is to enrich lives and build community by teaching traditional northern crafts in a student-centered learning environment that inspires the hands, the heart and the mind.

Five basic tenets guide all programs and classes at the folk school:
1. Create a rich, positive environment that inspires life-long learning in a non-competitive setting.
2. Promote and preserve the knowledge, skills, crafts and stories of the past and present.
3. Help students recognize and develop their creativity, talents and interests in a student-centered environment that affirms individual differences.
4. Foster the concept of inter-generational learning.
5. Provide creative and meaningful opportunities for individuals, families and groups.

The spirit, mission and vision of the North House have captured the imagination of many people, from Lake Superior's North Shore to Greater Minnesota and far beyond. In a typical year, over 350 classes are featured annually. Students arrive on campus from 35 states and multiple countries.
