The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is the only national park focused solely on the Mississippi River. Designated by an act of Congress in 1988, its role is to: protect, preserve and enhance the nationally significant resources and values of the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities metro area; encourage coordination of federal, state, and local programs; and assist local government in resource management. The boundaries of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area include the river and a narrow land boundary stretching from the Crow River near Ramsey, MN on the north end, to the Vermillion River Bottoms in Ravenna Township on the south end. The boundaries enclose 54,000 acres of which approximately 62 acres are managed by the National Park Service. A visitor center is located within the Science Museum of Minnesota building.
