Description:

This lesson plan outlines an engaging presentation-type lesson on the history and ecologic importance of peatlands in Minnesota. The lesson will guide students through the basic ecology of peatland ecosystems, the history of peatland disturbance in Minnesota, and the role of peatlands in the global carbon cycle and with regards to climate change.

Learning Outcomes: Students will come to understand:
1. What characteristics define peatland ecosystems?
2. What is the history of peatlands in Minnesota?
3. How are peatlands connected to the carbon cycle and climate change?
4. Optional: Students will participate in a hands-on soil texturing activity to understand the characteristics of hydric soils (subject to availability of soil samples).
