Description:

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is the primary state agency responsible for limiting pollution in order to protect human health and the environment. The agency's activities include monitoring the environment; setting standards; issuing permits to control activities that could cause pollution; offering technical assistance, education and information for regulated parties and the public; responding to environmental emergencies; preventing pollution; and carrying out many federal environmental programs.

Major issues that the agency is involved with include air quality, water quality, hazardous waste, tanks and spills, groundwater, solid waste, environmental review, environmental audits, and pollution prevention.

Upon request, the MPCA will send information on a wide variety of environmental issues to people and organizations in Minnesota (quantities may be limited). A list of general-interest publications and a list of audiovisual materials are available from the MPCA's Public Information Office. Some materials are also available at the MPCA's regional offices in Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Marshall and Rochester. The MPCA can be reached by calling 651.296.6300, TTY 651.282.5332, toll free 800.657.3864.

An extensive collection of environmental materials can be reviewed (not available for loan) by the public in the agency's library at the MPCA St. Paul office, 520 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul, MN 55155-4194.
