Description:

The Earth World gallery focuses on three Minnesota habitats: a maple-basswood forest, a cattail pond, and a prairie (in the form of an anthill). Within this realistic yet simplified environment, visitors are encouraged to explore features of the natural world, discover Minnesota creatures, and investigate animal homes. Here the emphasis is on observation, discovery, and exploration. Children are encouraged to crawl through a dead log, tunnel into the world of prairie ants through a giant anthill, feel bark and twig patterns, search for the diverse animals of our pond, and role-play with animal puppets and costumes. By exploring our giant anthill, plexi-glass pond, and woodchuck den as the animals that inhabit them, we offer an opportunity for our youngest naturalists to investigate the world from a different perspective. To top it off, visitors can climb up to the forest canopy and explore the life in the tops of the trees with a view from our tree house. Here the child becomes the scientist. The newest feature of Earth World is a pond and stream exhibit featuring live turtles and a water play stream table.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, we present various interpretive activities and programs at various times throughout the week. A variety of interpretive activities keeps children busy as they learn about what spiders eat for dinner, or how different animal furs feel. Animal Tales is a special story time presenting sensational animal stories. Natural Wonders presents the wonders of nature. Animal Interviews allows visitors to meet live animals up close and personally!
