The Lake Carlos Environmental Center began in 1983, offering educational programs to schools and community groups. Located 7.5 miles north of Alexandria on the shore of Lake Carlos, habitats found on the 96 acres include Maple-Basswood Forest, restored prairie, wetland, and lake shore. Programs are available for all ages, using these habitats, as well as offering cross country skiing, snowshoeing, orienteering, canoeing, low ropes course, and camping instruction. With only one school in residence at a time, the program is customized, focusing on specific curriculum and schedule that fits the needs and wishes of the individual school. With housing for up to
200 people year round, the Center provides a quality residential program for over 30 schools each year. A unique offering for parochial and private schools is a christian emphasis in the program, which may be included upon request. The Center provides instructors, classroom visits, and post trip materials which help people in Learning to Care for the Earth.
