The Harriet Alexander Nature Center (HANC) is an oasis in the heart of the Twin Cities nestled within the borders of Roseville's Central Park. On the grounds there is a boardwalk and trails that circulate through 52 acres of marsh, prairie and forest habitats. Come explore the marsh on the new boardwalk sections which are linked to the older sections, making for a nice long double loop. During your visit to HANC you might find migrating songbirds, towering prairie grasses, rows of painted turtles, or cottontail rabbits.
Interpretive Center
HANC's interpretive center has an interactive tree feature along with many other exhibits and displays. They offer a close-up opportunity to study plant and animal life. We have a reference library that includes storybooks, guidebooks and identification books for your use while in the building. Visitors can also discover the natural world through hands-on experiences:
Interactive displays
Live native animals
Touch and see area
Seasonal indoor honeybee observation hive
School Programs
HANC offers year-round environmental education programming for people of all ages and abilities. Our partnerships with local schools ensure that hundreds of students each year gain a better understanding of the natural world. Week-long summer day-camps and other school break camps offer exciting learning opportunities for kids. Join our naturalist staff in a unique outdoor setting to do meaningful environmental science!
HANC's preschool programs feature group sharing time, independent discovery stations, a sensory tub and kinesthetic area, take-home creative projects, and fun outdoor activities. Stations and activities address a variety of developmental skills and learning styles. They're designed to nurture and encourage shared connections with the natural world.
The K-6 programs feature at least 3 class options for classes for each season. Our naturalist-taught classes include "Scales & Tails", "Weather Trackers", "Winter Wildlife" and more. Programs are typically 90 minutes in length.
We offer six science themes and multiple program options within each theme for Middle & High School classes. Teachers and students can take advantage of a variety of field and lab experiences. Each individual program is 2 hours in length and is geared toward your group's age and ability level. You can choose a single program or spend a day exploring a theme in depth with two programs.
