Give Water A Hand was developed in 1996 by the National 4-H Council in partnership with over 20 leading national water management and education organizations in response to a USDA study of over 1,000 water curricula that identified a need to help youth take action on local water issues.
Give Water A Hand is national watershed education program designed to involve young people in local environmental service projects. Following steps in the Give Water A Hand Action Guide (accessible by clicking link below) your youth group or class plans and completes a community service project to protect and improve water resources.
Give Water A Hand program activities are presented in two publications - the Youth Action Guide and the Leader Guidebook (for youth leaders and teachers). These easy-to-follow, illustrated guides show how to organize and carry out effective action-oriented projects.
In these guides, students use a needs assessment to investigate local water issues, work with experts in their communities, and plan and carry out a service project that matches their skills and interests while addressing a real need. The action guides are geared toward students in grades 4-8, and can focus on four different sites: school, community, home, and farm/ranch. Give Water A Hand is based on an educational methodology called service-learning that teaches critical thinking and problem solving skills.
