Gale Woods Farm is an educational farm located in Minnetrista, approximately 30 miles west of downtown Minneapolis. This 410-acre park, located on the forested shores of Whaletail Lake, was donated by the Gale Family to Three Rivers Park District in 2000. Gale Woods Farm seeks to demonstrate the practices and culture of contemporary small-scale farming, and promote land stewardship through agriculture education.
At Gale Woods Farm, visitors from schools and the general public can work with farm animals; explore the orchard and its management; take a hayride through pastures and forests; spin sheep?s wool and learn to use fiber in knitting and weaving; participate in planting, tending, and harvesting vegetables in our organic gardens; and much more. Opening in August 2003, the farm provides opportunities for children and adults to participate in experiences that enhance their understanding of agriculture, food production, land stewardship and hand crafts. Seasonal farm activities will be the basis for scheduled programs and school group visits.
There are also many recreation opportunities at Gale Woods. The farm includes hiking areas on several miles of trails that loop around rolling fields, mature oak and maple-basswood forests, and undeveloped lakeshore and wetlands. A beautiful cross-country running course designed by area coaches is available for high school meets. The park provides canoe and rowboat rentals for visitors to explore the secluded bays of the lake. A fishing pier is available for fishing in Whaletail Lake.
A four-season rental picnic pavilion is available for large groups. This distinctive facility overlooks the lake, pastures, and gardens of the farm and can hold up to 400 people. In conjunction with facility rental, groups may participate in farm experiences such as sleigh rides, barn tours, wool spinning demonstrations, and orchard walks.
