Hennepin County encourages youth program leaders and formal and non-formal educators to use this toolkit to engage youth in creating a more sustainable future. This toolkit provides activities and resources appropriate for youth programs of any size and with any budget. The primary audience for the toolkit is youth program leaders, but older youth could also use the toolkit to design and lead activities for peers or younger youth.
Activities primarily target older elementary and middle school youth,but some activities or extensions will appeal to K - 3 and high school students.
The toolkit covers five topic areas: reducing waste, recycling, toxicity reduction, protecting water resources, and climate change and energy conservation.
Toolkit highlights include:
-Critical facts and background information on current environmental issues
-Low to no cost activity ideas that require minimal planning
-Project ideas that encourage youth leadership and initiative
-Service learning project ideas
-Field trip recommendations
-Interactive online and print resources for youth
The toolkit activities can be implemented easily into youth program curricula.
Activities include:
Reduce waste - host an eco fashion show
Recycle - what's in the bin? recycling sorting activity
Reduce toxicity - make your own non-toxic cleaner
Raise climate change awareness - think globally, eat locally
Improve water resources - down the drain: water pollution detectives
