Deep Portage Learning Center (DPLC) is an accredited educational institution that provides environmental, conservation, and outdoor recreation programming to groups from Minnesota and beyond. Our school is located in Cass County, MN, about an hour north of the Brainerd area, on the 6,300-acre Deep Portage Conservation Reserve.
Our primary facility is the 54,000-square foot Resource Heritage Center, which houses modern accommodations for up to 200, a full-service commercial kitchen, multiple classrooms and meeting spaces, and a 35-foot tall indoor climbing wall. Outdoor facilities include a 55-foot tall observation tower, northern bog boardwalk, low-ropes challenge course, canoe livery on Bass Pond with an easy portage to Big Deep Lake, archery and rifle ranges, land navigation course, and 12 kilometers of maintained hiking and Nordic ski trails. All trails and non-motorized lake access points are open to the public, but DPLC facilities, equipment and programming are provided for previously scheduled groups in residence only.
We see groups of all kinds, young and old, but specialize in elementary and junior high school programs that last for 1 to 3 days. A visit might include classes in forest and aquatic ecology, teambuilding, orienteering, xc skiing, snowshoeing, alternative energy, wilderness survival, MN cultural history and more.
