The Master Water Stewards program is a partnership between the Freshwater Society and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, with funding provided by the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment.
The Master Water Stewards program will certify and support community leaders to install pollution prevention projects that educate community members, reduce pollutants from urban runoff, and allow more water to soak into the ground before running into storm sewer systems. If you live in the Minnehaha Creek Watershed, you can make a real difference in the health of our waters.
Stewards are:
Community leaders
Advocates for clean water
Educators who teach about clean water
Sources of accurate information on urban water issues
Knowledgeable, informed volunteers
Stewards do:
Help neighbors have a positive impact on water quality
Help neighbors understand how water flows across their property
Act as liaisons between neighbors or community members and landscape designers, other landscape professionals, and local watershed personnel
Conduct education and outreach campaigns
Act as education and outreach volunteers for agencies and other organizations
Work across cultural, political, economic and other social boundaries to achieve clean water goals
Modeled after successful Master Gardener programs, volunteer community leaders will participate in a 50-hour program of courses and projects. Certified Master Water Stewards will volunteer 50 hours of community service in the initial year of certification, up to 25 hours each subsequent year and ongoing education in order to maintain their certification. On this web site you'll find resources to support Stewards, connect Stewards to technical expertise, continuing education opportunities, and other community members.
In 2013, during the first year of the pilot, the program focused on the Minneapolis neighborhoods surrounding Minnehaha Creek and the Chain of Lakes. In 2014, the program expanded to additional neighborhoods in Minneapolis and first- ring suburbs, including Edina, St. Louis Park, Hopkins and Richfield. In 2015, the program will expand to the rest of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District to include the upper part of the watershed.
