Description:

The Agassiz Audubon Center (formerly known as the Wetlands, Pines and Prairie Audubon Sanctuary) is located east of Warren in the Red River Valley of northwestern Minnesota. The first thing people notice when they visit is the topography. We are "flat-landers." The closest thing to "elevation" out here is the beach ridge that runs along the west side of the Agassiz Audubon Center.

Blame it on the ice sheets during the "Wisconsin Glacial Episode" 10,000 years ago, which covered most of the North American Continent. As the ice sheets retreated (global warming) a huge, but shallow lake -- approximately five times the size of North Dakota - was formed. This lake held more water than all the Great Lakes combined -- and more water than all the lakes in the world today.

Our "beach ridge" location makes every day a "beach day" at the Agassiz Audubon Center - and across the street at the Agassiz Valley Water Resources Project (a 4 sq. mile flood control impoundment).

Come on up and experience the Tallgrass Aspen Parkland and our amazing wildlife: bears and Bobolinks, pelicans and penstemon, orchids and Short-eared Owls. Call to schedule a program - and participate in one of our citizen-science field projects.
