Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, MN is seeking a summer camp teacher for their 2024 summer season. Each themed day camp is four days long (Monday-Thursday) and some camps repeat. Friday is a prep day for the following week. There are two Summer Camp Teachers that are sometimes assisted by interns. Ideal candidates will have prior experience teaching elementary-aged children, a strong interest in animals, and a background in biology, zoology, or ecology.
Principal Duties:
- Summer Zoo Camp program
- Teach groups of 10-15 children ages 6-12 each week using camp lessons.
- Utilize the zoo’s exhibits, creek, and outdoor classroom to teach campers about animals and nature through animal presentations, science projects, games, art, and exploration.
- Improve existing summer camp lessons by creating fun, hands-on activities for a variety of ages and learning styles.
- Effectively manage classroom setting and outdoor activities.
- Prepare teaching materials and set up and clean classroom daily.
- Organize safe arrival and departure of children.
- Be a supportive team member by sharing ideas, assisting others, and participating in meetings.
- Miscellaneous duties
- Attend training to learn to properly handle animals including reptiles and invertebrates.
- Assist with spring programs such as outreaches, field trips, and special events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience Requirements:
- B.A. or B.S. degree preferred, or minimum 3 years of college study in environmental education, biology, education, or related field.
- Previous experience as an informal or formal educator preferred.
Competency & Knowledge Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to work with children ages 6-12.
- Working knowledge of animals, conservation, learning styles, and interpretation.
- Experience with lesson plan development.
- Public speaking and presentation skills.
- Self-motivated, takes initiative.
- Ability to operate as a member of a team.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Required Hours and Availability:
- Start date negotiable; must be available part time or full time in May for training.
- Camps begin June 10 and end August 16; optional time off week of July 1-5.
- Typical work week is Monday-Friday from 8:00-4:30 starting June 10.
