Job Description

Role Summary:

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an individual to coordinate and lead environmental education programs for Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary located in Theodore Wirth Regional Park.  This seasonal position is responsible for program outreach and advertisement; scheduling groups; scheduling and training part-time naturalist staff for programs; curriculum development and organization of program activities; program-related data collection, recording and reporting; occasionally leading programs; and other duties as assigned.  This individual should be organized, enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, and personable, with a commitment to creating high-quality education programs and interpretive opportunities for visitors.

Work season & schedule: February 3, 2020– November 13, 2020. Part-time hours, up to 29 hours a week. Shifts generally scheduled from 8:00am-1:45pm Monday-Friday. Required attendance at staff meetings and trainings scheduled: 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month from 3:30-5:30pm April-October and March 18 and 25 from 1:30-5:30pm. Commitment to complete full Garden season is required.

Essential Duties:

  • Coordinate and schedule special tours, classes and public programs
  • Manage correspondence and communication with tour groups and tour participants
  • Keep detailed records of program related information
  • Perform key administrative tasks related to programs, patrons, staff and volunteers
  • Train and schedule naturalist to lead tours and interpretive programs for youth and adults
  • Develop curriculum and enhance existing curriculum for fun and engaging tours and interpretive programs
  • Create and update website information and social media platform posts
  • Coordinate development of program brochures, calendars, newsletters and other promotional materials
  • Assist with special projects, programs, and events
  • Diplomatically enforce MPRB rules and regulations

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of environmental education practices and principals
  • Knowledge of and interest in MN flora and fauna and environmental science topics
  • Ability to work well with children, adults and diverse populations
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate group programs, staff, field trips, special events
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision
  • Ability to problem-solve, multi-task and manage projects and time efficiently
  • Ability to work in an outdoor setting (including inclement weather)
  • Ability to follow directions, complete assignments, and meet deadlines

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and college-level coursework in environmental education, education, environmental sciences, or related subjects
  • Three or more months of interpretive or program coordination experience working at least 20 hours per week at a nature center, camp, zoo, arboretum or similar venue
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with children, adults, and diverse populations through previous work/volunteer experiences
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and develop programs
  • Competency working with Windows Operating System including proficiency using Outlook, Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, environmental sciences, or a related field
  • Previous experience working as an interpretive naturalist or educator
  • Fluency in a second language (including Spanish, Somali, Hmong, ASL)

Compensation:

$17 / hour
