Job Description

The East Metro Water Resource Education Program (EMWREP - www.mnwcd.org/emwrep) and Lower St. Croix One Watershed Partnership (LSC - www.lsc1w1p.org) are seeking a highly motivated and uniquely qualified individual to conduct water education in Washington County and the Lower St. Croix Basin, Minnesota. The successful applicant will be an employee of the Washington Conservation District (WCD - www.mnwcd.org) and also work basin-wide.
The ideal candidate will be skilled at motivating behavior change to protect natural resources; building partnerships; utilizing print and on-line media; communicating with and presenting to a wide variety of audiences; and conducting education in non-formal settings.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Conducting education about water quality, nonpoint source water pollution, aquatic invasive species, groundwater conservation, watershed ecology and management, habitat restoration, and agricultural conservation practices.
  • Creating print and digital materials such as fact sheets, brochures, newsletters and mailings.
  • Creating and delivering education content via websites, social media platforms, and email lists.
  • Planning, promoting, and conducting workshops and other events to help urban and rural residents develop the knowledge and skills to complete habitat and water quality improvement projects on their land, such as: native plantings, raingardens, shoreline buffers, land stewardship planning, habitat restoration, and agricultural practices.
  • Conducting education for local decisions makers (city councils, planning commissions, watershed boards, county commissioners, etc.) and staff to provide them the information and training needed to implement policies, programs, and practices that protect and restore water resources. This includes coordinating with staff and local partners; attending and presenting at council and board meetings; and planning special workshops and events.
  • Building partnerships with state and local government, non-profit orgs, lake associations, and community groups.
  • Coordinating regularly with local government partners in EMWREP and the LSC.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, natural resources, environmental education, environmental communications, or similar. Three to five years of environmental education experience. Self-motivated, able to show a commitment to high quality work, attention to detail, and time management to complete projects on schedule while dealing with diverse audiences. Effective communication and public speaking skills. Excellent computer skills. Must have valid driver's license and good driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

An advanced degree or work towards an advanced degree in a directly related field is desirable. Experience with computer software and web platforms including Microsoft Office suite, InDesign, SquareSpace, WordPress, and Facebook. Beneficial skills and experience include writing, graphic design, social media, survey design, and event planning. Basic knowledge about native plants, gardening, and conservation is also preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work involves 60-70% indoor work and frequent travel within Anoka, Chisago, Isanti, Pine, Ramsey, and Washington Counties. Office work includes frequent interruptions and diverse daily activities. Office equipment used includes telephone, computers, copier, LCD projector and fax machine.
