Job Description

Job Announcement: Water Quality Environmental Educator 

 

Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an individual to work as a Water Quality Educator to work in multiple locations throughout Minneapolis at community events and celebrations.  The Water Quality Educator will: 

  • Provide interactive water quality education at canoe and bike programs as well as events to a diverse group of patrons at Minneapolis Parks*   
  • Assist with coordinating MPRB participation at community and neighborhood events leading water quality presentations* 

*Note: Programs will be designed to follow MDH safety guidelines during the pandemic, which may include limited group size, masks, physical distancing, staying outside, or other measures as conditions change 

  • Assist in the development of new water quality education materials 
  • Assist with coordinating educational outreach efforts to local businesses 
  • Track participation and evaluate program effectiveness 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

Work Season and Hours: Monday through Friday, primarily in the evenings, plus availability for four weekend days/evenings per month.  Average 20-20 hours per week, June through August. 

 

Compensation:  $14.50  per hour, plus mileage reimbursement provided.  This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance.  This position is not eligible for other benefits. 

 

Requirements/Qualifications: 

  • Outgoing personality able to draw in participants  
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse audiences in a public setting    
  • Working knowledge of watersheds, nonpoint source pollution, and water quality issues 
  • Working knowledge of tabling education techniques and messaging  
  • Ability to work flexible schedule  
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs, hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions 
  • Must have a driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle to haul program materials and drive between work assignment locations  

 

Desired but Not Required:  

  • Demonstrated success teaching in event settings 
  • Previous experience giving public presentations 
  • Knowledge of interpretive display design  
  • Ability to communicate fluently in a second language.  Spanish, Hmong, or Somali preferred.
