Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking a Water Quality Education Program Lead to work in multiple locations throughout Minneapolis in neighborhood parks and at community events and celebrations.
The Water Quality Education Program Lead will:
- Coordinate MPRB participation at community and neighborhood events leading water quality education tabling activities
- Provide positive, outdoor, interactive, water quality-based education programming to a diverse group of patrons and participants at Minneapolis parks
- Provide leadership and problem-solving for Water Quality Education seasonal staff
- Coordinate the Canines for Clean Water educational campaign and corresponding events
- Develop new water quality education materials and/or programming
- Coordinate educational outreach efforts to local businesses
- Track participation and evaluate program effectiveness
- Occasionally support canoe programs and neighborhood naturalist community programming
- Other duties as assigned
Work season and hours: Mid-April through November. The spring and fall schedule will be 20 hours per week, and the schedule for June-August will be 35-40 hours per week. Hours include daytime and evenings typically Tues-Sat between 9am to 8pm with occasional shifts outside these days/hours. The exact schedule will vary depending on programming each week.
Compensation: $22.00 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement when driving a personal vehicle for work purposes within scheduled work hours. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Strong organizational, communication, public speaking, and leadership skills
- Outgoing personality, able to draw in participants
- Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse audiences in a public setting
- Working knowledge of Minnesota hydrology, nonpoint source pollution, and water quality issues
- Working knowledge of tabling education techniques and messaging
- Academic training in environmental education and/or water ecology
- Ability to work flexible schedule
- Ability to lift 30lbs, hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions
- Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle to haul program materials and drive between work assignment locations
Desired but Not Required:
- Demonstrated success teaching in event settings
- Previous experience giving public presentations
- Knowledge of interpretive display design
- Ability to communicate fluently in a second language. Spanish, Hmong, or Somali preferred.
