Wild Rivers Conservancy is looking for committed volunteers to help raise Galerucella beetles for release. Starting in May, volunteers will receive a kit with everything needed to properly raise Galerucella beetles, including purple loosestrife plants, netting, and of course, beetles! Plants will require watering once a week, and a weekly plant evaluation form must be filled out. As the purple loosestrife plants grow, so do the number of beetles in the enclosure. By the end of the summer, the beetles will be ready for release!
To see if you are eligible to contribute your time and resources to this effort, please complete the application at the bottom of the Project Webpage by March 24, 2023. Upon review, eligible volunteers will be notified by March 31, 2023.
Once selected, you will be required to attend a training session to learn more about the volunteer expectations and to pick up the supplies you will need. The two dates are either May 13 or May 20.
After completing the rearing setup, you will need to be able to tend to the plants and provide a once-per-week status update on the health of the plants and beetles. Later in the summer between mid-July to mid-August, the release of your beetles will be coordinated with Conservancy staff.
