Join our Museum Experiences team as a Tour Tech and help maintain, set-up and takedown science-based traveling exhibitions in off-site locations. Techs work with the borrowing institution’s crew members as part of a team under the direction of a Science Museum of Minnesota tech lead or manager. The position demonstrates best practices in handling, assembling and disassembling of exhibition components while employing the utmost safety standards and customer service.
Work Environment & Schedule: Museum exhibition galleries in other cities working with a diverse group of museum employees, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) members, and/or temporary work agency employees. National and international air travel required. Air travel, ladder work, and lifting required. Long periods away from home required; approximately 2-6 weeks every 3-6 months. Ability to rent a car preferred.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Comprehend and utilize setup/take-down, packing/unpacking and loading/unloading procedures ensuring assigned traveling exhibition changeovers are achieved safely and on-time.
- Follow the guidance of the tour manager and/or tour tech lead to adhere to a sometimes shifting work plan.
- Support a safe environment on the worksite; practice and model safety in your behavior; anticipate potential safety hazards and installation obstacles.
- Work alongside host museum crew members, select and provide necessary resources (tools, hardware, and equipment) and guide their work in exhibition handling procedures to efficiently and safely complete assigned tasks.
- Helps identify and diagnose potential defects or wear developing in the exhibition’s components or operation which could compromise its appearance, reliability, functionality, and safety for the visitor. If urgent, address immediately and inform the supervisor.
- Implement formalized changes in work processes and procedures that may contribute to a safer, more efficient and/or accurate work procedures.
- Embrace situations in which customer expectations are successfully fulfilled while the needs of the product are not compromised.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- No formal education required.
- Demonstrated experience in theater set, trade show booth, complex three-dimensional art show or museum exhibition assembly, maintenance and packing.
- Significant client or customer service experience.
- Proven knowledge of rigging best practices.
- Proven knowledge of media hardware installation, including overhead projector and speaker rigging.
- Must be able to travel by air stateside and abroad (nationally and internationally).
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to obtain a valid passport.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Schooling or practical mentorship in theatrical arts, cabinet making, computer hardware maintenance, or other related trades recommended.
- Forklift, scissor lift, and rigging certifications desirable.
- Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
- Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
- Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).
Hiring Pay Range: $24.89 - 28.00+ hourly / Depending on Qualifications.
