Job Title: Minnesota Sea Grant Education Specialist Temporary

Begin date: June 26, 2023 (approximate)

End date: August 31, 2023

Total hours: 160 hours

Location: Hybrid work; mostly remote.  Can be located anywhere in Minnesota or Wisconsin with ability to travel to Duluth, MN the first week of August for an in-person event.  Travel expenses such as mileage, hotel and food will be covered.

Pay rate: $35.00 per hour

Job summary

Minnesota Sea Grant seeks an Education Specialist Temporary to participate in an innovative Center for Great Lakes Literacy project. The Education Specialist Temporary will be responsible for developing guidance materials and a list of stewardship and community science activities that can be used by educators to directly engage students in their local watersheds after playing the Watershed Game. The specialist will be provided with training and resources to increase their knowledge in stormwater management and the Watershed Game, as well as example programs and activities to get started. As applicable, the activities should be shown how they tie to Minnesota Standards and/or Next Generation Science Standards, should be geared towards both middle school and high school classrooms, and include suggestions for adapting the lesson to a younger audience. The Education Specialist Temporary will be responsible for creative development and identification of stewardship and community science activities that are engaging and meaningful to students. The materials will become part of Minnesota Sea Grant’s Watershed Game Program and will be made publicly available on the Center for Great Lakes Literacy website.

Job tasks and essential functions

1. Work closely with Minnesota Sea Grant Extension Educators to develop and refine the resource materials.
2. Develop a resource list of twenty or more existing stewardship or community science projects appropriate for middle school and high school classrooms to engage in (e.g. iNaturalist, Adopt-a-Drain, etc.). This list should include such information as: contact
information, website, appropriate grade levels, how it might connect to state standards, how it relates to the Watershed Game, materials or equipment needed, etc.
3. Create a general guidance document on how to incorporate a stewardship or community science project into the curriculum after playing the Watershed Game.
4. As time allows: design hands-on activities that could complement the Watershed Game and/or help bridge the game with a stewardship or community science activity.
5. Present at and participate in the Minnesota Educator Workshop on the Water event (Duluth, MN) during the first week in August 2023.

Description of duties

• Develop lessons, activities, and related instructional materials aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (65%)
• Develop learning assessment tools (25%)
• Address unit feedback and concerns stemming from content review (10%)

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least six years of relevant post degree experience
  • Experience teaching or working with K - 12 youth
  • Experience and ability developing engaging curriculum and/or lesson plans in a K - 12 education setting
  • Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards
  • Core knowledge of science, mathematics, engineering, or related fields
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Organized, detail oriented, focused, independent, and reliable
  • Able to meet deadlines while working independently
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace
