This position will build collective will for climate action through community programs and workshops, the annual Talk Climate Institute, the quarterly Talk Climate email digest, and partnerships with organizations seeking climate engagement expertise. Your Team: Our education, advocacy, and organizing efforts work interdependently to advance systemic climate change solutions based in science and lived experience. This position will work with staff across the organization, including the Senior Policy Manager, Communications, Development and Marketing Team, and the full Programs team to support community program and narrative development and outreach. Our team members are dispersed throughout Minnesota and remotely with monthly in-person meetings for Minnesota based staff, and annual in-person meetings for the full team. We are inclusive, agile, creative, and goal-oriented. We are inspired by our mission, vision, values, and the future of our organization. We come together monthly at Programs Team Meetings to build community and our shared expertise, and to offer support to one another. Each team member meets with the Senior Director of Programs weekly or bi-monthly to stay aligned with the overall strategic vision of the program and to receive support for their individual projects.
Your Role: As the Talk Climate Manager for Climate Generation, you serve as the community program lead, updating current programs and developing new ones in response to current trends and issues in climate change and climate justice. You will plan an annual Talk Climate Institute and supporting workshops throughout the year, focused on developing climate literacy, an understanding of intersectional solutions, and developing personal climate narratives to share. The Talk Climate Manager collaborates with Communications, Development and Marketing in development of programs for business partners, sharing of important climate narratives, and producing an email newsletter Talk Climate Digest.
Duties and responsibilities:
Program Management and Collaborative Partnerships (65%)
- In partnership with Senior Director of Programs, provide vision and strategic ideas to build and grow community engagement initiatives including the Talk Climate Institute using story and climate conversations as a tool for action
- In partnership with Programs and Communications teams develop and provide community presentations, storytelling workshops, and relationships with relevant community members and leaders, other nonprofits, select businesses, educational institutions, governmental agencies, and other appropriate organizations and key stakeholders forming cross-functional working teams as needed
- Work with Senior Policy Program Manager to connect community members to decision makers and to develop strategic programs with intended policy outcomes
- With support from Senior Director of Programs and Communications Manager, stay abreast of current issues and research in Community engagement and climate change communication through collaboration with partners and direct research
- Elevate critical voices in the climate movement, with a particular focus on youth, women, individuals with disabilities, and communities of color through program development to inspire individual, community, business and/or decision makers to take action
- Establish and cultivate new relationships between Climate Generation and stakeholders, new and strategic partners
Development (5%)
- Track and monitor Talk Climate program budget, managing for cost containment, and help develop annual program revenue goals in collaboration with Senior Director of Programs and Senior Finance Manager
- Works with Grants Manager and Senior Finance Manager to ensure compliance with all requirements of funders, including grant reporting, budget management, tracking data and participation
Communications (20%)
- Provide content for all Climate Generation communications as requested by the Marketing and Communications Manager, and participate in CG’s editorial planning process
- Produce a Talk Climate Digest newsletter in collaboration with Communications and Marketing
- Develop and share resources that promote Climate Generation, including webinars, workshops and presentations
- Solicit and support climate story development and publication (written and video) from community members and program attendees ensuring access to and sharing of stories for Communications and Marketing efforts
- Participate in and contribute to communications and marketing strategy as identified by the Marketing and Communications Manager
Organizational Engagement (10%):
- Engage in Climate Generation team functions and events
- Support and participate in anti-racism and equity work across the organization
- Coordinate with Programs Coordinator on volunteer needs, event logistics, program materials, and vendor relations
- Seek opportunities to grow professionally and encourage professional development of supervised staff
Minimum Qualifications:
- Outstanding public speaking, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to write the stories of groups most harmed by environmental injustices
- 5+ years experience developing and delivering highly engaging community programs
- 5+ years education or equivalent experience in a related field, such as education, communications, public speaking, community-based civic engagement activities related or adjacent to the issue of climate justice
- Passion for climate justice and the different ways that people power can create change.
- Ability to communicate intersectional concepts for multiple learners at different levels of understanding
- Ability to learn and interpret the different forms of communication that exists between groups
- Ability to navigate conflict and adapt to challenges
- Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with a small and dedicated team
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted and authentic relationships with colleagues and partners
- Comfortable with technology or ability to learn, including Zoom, Google docs, and Slack
- Available for occasional evening and weekend work commitments
- Committed to an equitable workplace and integrating antiracism into program planning and operations
- Commitment to antiracism with experience in racially and geographically diverse communities
- Experience establishing and cultivating new relationships with stakeholders, donors, partners
- Ability to conduct research and apply culturally competent practices to talks
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience developing and delivering highly engaging, culturally appropriate programs for diverse audiences
- Experience with grassroots community organizing in diverse racial and geographic areas.
- Strong understanding of intersectional solutions of climate and racial justice
- Experience in a supervisory role
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary for this position is between $51,000-$54,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Full-time, exempt position, working 40 hours per week
