Job Description

Nature of Work

Site Information: 

Wood Lake Nature Center is in the heart of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area.  It is a busy urban park that is comprised of 150-acres of forest, prairie, and cattail marsh habitat, and is dedicated to high-quality environmental education and interpretive programs.  The park has miles of recreational trails and a nature center facility that is open every day to the public.

Season and Time Commitment

The Summer Intern Naturalist position is a 12-week  position. Position starts June 8 and goes through August 31, 2022 (dates are flexible).  This position is approximately 30 hours per week, Monday through Friday; 8:30 am to 3:00 pm (hours are flexible). Applicant must be available to work Saturday, July 30, 2022.

Job Duties

  • Summer Intern Naturalist will join a dynamic staff to offer the best quality educational, recreational and natural experiences possible for visitors.
  • Interns will participate in training that will support the design and instruction of summer camps and other environmental education and interpretive programming.
  • Assist with a variety of daily and summer-long projects as they arise (prairie management, exotic species control, trail maintenance, exhibit and displays, instruct volunteers and event planning).
  • Interns complete a project of their choice that is tailored to their interests.
  • Interns will be a part of the Urban Wildland Half Marathon and 5K Races planning committee.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure Richfield is an equitable, inclusive and respectful organization and supports the City’s mission, vision and core values.
  • Demonstrates an ability to understand and respect the diversity of customers and co-workers, effectively communicating with individuals whose first language may be one other than English.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Interest or experience in environmental education and/or interpretation
  • Must pass a background check
  • Effective communication skills and ability to be a team player

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-2 years college study
  • Experience working with youth
  • Natural history knowledge

Supplemental Information

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential functions require moderate physical activity such as standing, hiking, lifting, kneeling, sitting, crouching, twisting, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting and lifting materials and supplies ranging from 20-40 lbs.

Signing Bonus Program – If a new seasonal worker starts a position in Recreation, they will receive a $100 bonus on their second paycheck in June.

 

Commitment program- If you work until last weekend August 24th you get $100 stipends and your uniform costs reimbursed (up to $50 for recreation workers).

 

Please also note that we will be allowing some flexibility in hiring for the step hiring managers are starting their seasonal staff at (with a recommendation from HR after reviewing their background of experience/ education relevant to the position):

 

Future Step increases- The future step increase from one year to the next are decided by the facility/program manager.
