Summer Naturalist & Animal Care - Job Description

The summer naturalist/animal care position is an ideal opportunity for someone with environmental education experience who is looking to further develop their overall knowledge and experiences in the day to day operations of a non-profit nature center. The position offers opportunities to be directly involved in program delivery, animal husbandry, interacting with public visitors and overall operational support.

This position runs from late May through the end of August

The normal work week is 40 hours, Monday – Friday; 8:15am - 4:45pm
Occasional weekend days (not to exceed 6 weekend days over the course of 3 months)

Pay is dependent on qualifications and experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Develop & teach environmental education programs as assigned by the program coordinator
  • Clean, feed and care for the nature center’s live animals under the direction of lead animal care staff
  • Assist with the overall operations of the nature center and the summer nature camp program
  • Substitute teach in the summer camp program as needed
  • Assist with the rock climbing program; including setting ropes and acting as belay
  • Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program
  • Know, enforce and follow all safety guidelines as outlined by Quarry Hill Nature Center

Qualifications:

  • College level coursework such as an internship or practicum, or direct working experience, with youth related programming such as camps, sports or other recreation based youth activities.
  • Experience and comfort with handling and caring for captive animals such as snakes, turtles, raptors, invertebrates, rodents and amphibians
  • Preferably college course work in the natural sciences
  • Current First Aid certification or the ability to obtain certification upon hire
  • Ability to lead and implement Quarry Hill program curriculum and activities
  • Ability to maintain an upbeat & positive attitude all summer with co-workers and program participants
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
