Job Summary

This position exists to support conservation education by assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of education horse programs and animal husbandry duties for the animals in the summer exhibit collection . This position is also responsible for promoting the importance of conservation, and the Minnesota Zoo’s mission of connecting people, animals and the natural world to save wildlife.

Please note: this is a part-time, temporary position, for about 20 hours/week for the summer season from April to November 2020.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of age appropriate educational pedagogy best practices for toddlers to adults
  • Strong foundation of knowledge in natural sciences, conservation, and sustainability issues
  • Excellent horse management, care, and instructional skills sufficient to provide care for the animals and instruction to program participants of varying ages
  • Excellent teaching and presentation skills, practices and processes
  • Evidence of exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to acquire and maintain knowledge of the Minnesota Zoo operational services, philosophy, objectives and guidelines
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to carry and use two-way portable radios to communicate with all zoo staff
  • Flexible availability including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and overnights

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proven experience in environmental, experiential and/or outdoor learning theory and methodology
  • Practical experience with current and cutting edge educational methods
  • Awareness of, sensitivity to, and empathy with animals, their needs, and their importance in the environment
  • Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and walk long distances on uneven terrain

  • This position requires successful completion of the following:
  • Employment verification checks, criminal background checks, child protection check and driver's license check.
