Job Description

Position Description: The primary role of the Summer Camps & Fellowship Co-Manager is to oversee the Summer Camp and Fellowship programs in collaboration with their co-manager. This includes but is not limited to the directing of summer camp and fellowship programming, and supervision and management of Fellowship and Summer Camp Naturalist participants. This person performs numerous behind-the-scenes tasks and must be prepared to problem solve and think logistically both individually and collaboratively. By exhibiting positivity, empathy, and a growth mindset, this individual should be passionate about mentoring the next generation of Environmental Educators. 

 

Essential Functions:

30% - Summer Camp Manager:

  • Generate camp schedules and staffing; coordinate camp needs with other departments; provide support (leading staff meetings, managing camp equipment and budget, program assessment, etc.); cooperatively make effective decisions about schedule changes, emergency situations, and camper supervision, safety, and behavior management, during the evenings and as needed
  • Create, design, and disseminate digital materials for campers and their parents; be the primary contact with camper parents; collaborate with the Development & Marketing Director on marketing tasks 

40% - Fellowship and Summer Camp Naturalist Manager:

  • Oversee and manage seasonal staff; create a culture of teamwork and support; execute regular meetings and evaluations; monitor job performance and discipline issues related to seasonal staff; compile portfolios; conduct interviews and on-board staff; update seasonal staff handbooks; manage resources and budget.
  • Plan and oversee trainings; schedule and organize weekly graduate seminars in aspects of environmental education pedagogy, operation, and programming; grade homework

30% - Education Department Team Member:

  • Teach science, adventure, and cultural history classes to a variety of audiences; learn and present one-hour evening Naturalist Programs and work up to one weekend a month; Primary Audience: 4th-8th grade; conduct outreach programs as necessary.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and show sincerity/sensitivity especially in areas of participant experience; show a commitment to individual and organizational growth and improvement; be flexible and maintain a positive attitude and composure when working alone/in teams, receiving constructive criticism, and during times of stress; show dependability in attendance.
  • Attend monthly Education Department meetings; lead adult welcomes for teachers and chaperones; assist with curriculum development and review; continually sharpen skills by attending trainings and participating in professional organizations.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications & Skills: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years experience with the development and delivery of camp programs and activities as a camp counselor, or equivalent experience
  • Managerial or supervisory experience
  • 2 years teaching experience; familiarity with outdoor teaching and pedagogical techniques
  • Strong leadership skills: dependable, organized, highly determined, flexible
  • Approachable, patient, and empathetic manager
  • Communicates clearly, effectively, and tactfully; active listener and collaborator
  • Experience in outdoor, adventure-based activities such as camping, climbing, canoeing
  • General environmental literacy
  • Computer, radio, and audio-visual equipment literacy
  • Current CPR and First-Aid certification or willingness to obtain prior to start date
  • Current driver’s license

 Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • M.A./M.S. in education, management, or related field
  • Experience in an administrative or supervisory role in an overnight summer camp setting
  • 3+ years of managerial and supervisory experience; experience evaluating staff
  • 3+ years teaching experience; some residential environmental education
  • Knowledge of B.E.E.T.L.E.S. techniques 
  • Experience digitally creating content for stakeholders
  • Knowledge of SE MN ecological systems and natural history
  • Have prior experience facilitating challenge courses, outdoor lead climbing, river canoeing, and camping experiences; are able to provide field support as necessary
  • First responder, WFA, WFR, or EMT certification

 An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
