Job Description |
Zoo Camp is a summer day camp program run by the Education Department at the Lake Superior Zoo. Each themed camp is four days long (Monday-Thursday) and some camps repeat. Friday is a prep day for the following week. There are two Summer Camp Teachers that are sometimes assisted by interns. Ideal candidates will have prior experience teaching elementary-aged children, a strong interest in animals, and a background in biology, zoology, or ecology.
Principal Duties:
- Summer Zoo Camp program
- Teach groups of 10-15 children ages 6-12 each week using camp lessons.
- Utilize the zoo’s exhibits, creek, and outdoor classroom to teach campers about animals and nature through animal presentations, science projects, games, art, and exploration.
- Improve existing summer camp lessons by creating fun, hands-on activities for a variety of ages and learning styles.
- Effectively manage classroom setting and outdoor activities.
- Prepare teaching materials and set up and clean classroom daily.
- Organize safe arrival and departure of children.
- Be a supportive team member by sharing ideas, assisting others, and participating in meetings.
- Miscellaneous duties
- Attend training to learn to properly handle animals including mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates.
- Assist with spring programs such as outreaches, field trips, and special events.
- Other duties as assigned.
