Program/Unit description: Established in 1974 as part of the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, The Raptor Center (TRC) is an internationally renowned organization caring for raptors and the world we share with them. TRC provides environmental education and public outreach to approximately 100,000 people annually through its live bird programing utilizing a cohort of 30 education raptors. Position description: This position will carry out front line operations and program activities for a 24-month grant-funded initiative to expand access to TRC education programming to schools across Minnesota. The mission of this programming is to increase access to the environmental world, combat bio phobia, and foster empathy about the environment in Minnesota youth that historically do not have access to such programming. This outreach will utilize live raptors and associated curriculum. Under the direction of the Education Program Coordinator, this position will assist in the development, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of on- and off‐site interpretive programming associated with the grant. It will also assist with the care, management, and training of education raptors housed permanently at The Raptor Center and daily oversight of volunteers working in the department. This is a 12-month 100% FTE position, with annual renewal dependent on funding and performance- for a maximum duration of 24 months.
Essential functions:
- Assist the Education Program Coordinator with pre-research, curriculum development, and program evaluation strategy (20%)
- Assist with literature review on approaches to combat biophobia, the development of empathy in children, and past strategies to measure the impact of educational programming on these topics
- Assist with developing new curriculum for virtual and in-person educational programming
- Assist with creating content and curating written and digital materials to be used before and after live educational programing
- Work with evaluators to evolve programs for effectiveness over the grant cycle
- Carry out educational programs onsite, offsite, and virtually. (40%)
- Provide engaging interpretive programs on raptor natural history, ecology, conservation, and general environmental science topics
- Demonstrate best practices in instructional strategies and audience engagement utilizing live birds
- Deliver scientifically accurate content in alignment with state standards and programmatic goals
- Carry out operational activities around educational grant programming including: (15%)
- Communicate with teachers to coordinate classroom visits and to solicit program evaluation
- Track program supplies and budgetary expenses
- Maintain an online web-based resource of educational materials for teachers to use around programming
- Assist with the physical care, training and other management duties to maintain the excellent health and welfare of the education raptor collection. (20%)
- Assist in training and maintaining core raptor behaviors required for programs and management
- Assist with daily raptor management (write diets, track feedings/weights, medication delivery, beak and talon maintenance, maintaining facilities, etc.)
- Assist in education department volunteer management
- Other duties as assigned (5%)
Qualifications
- Minimum:
- H.S Diploma and minimum one-year public outreach or teaching diverse audiences
- Excellent presentation and teaching skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and effectively with others using strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work Tuesday - Saturday for a normal working schedule
- Willingness to travel with overnights
- Willingness to routinely work a flexible schedule including dates outside of the normal working schedule including evenings and holidays
- Ability to obtain a driver’s license as this position will involve driving a university vehicle to deliver programming to schools in greater Minnesota
- Able to lift 35 pounds (weight of an adult eagle in a crate)
- Comfortable around large birds
- Preferred:
- Advanced studies or training/experience in Animal Science, Biology, Environmental Studies, K-12 Education or other related area
- Fluency in a second language
- Experience presenting outreach programming utilizing captive wild animals
- Curriculum writing or education program design experience
- Experience working with and managing volunteers
