The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking an individual to support and lead informal and formal environmental education activities and programs for visitors to the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary located in Theodore Wirth Regional Park. In 2023, this seasonal position is responsible for: leading and supporting scheduled public programs and activities, including evening programs; leading and supporting private paid tours; conducting program-related data collection, recording and reporting; overseeing development and care of educational activities, tools and displays; assisting Garden Curator with program advertisement through various media including social media, and other duties as assigned. This individual should be highly organized, detail oriented, enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, and personable, with a commitment to supporting and leading high-quality education programs and interpretive opportunities for visitors.
Essential Duties (2023):
- Lead programs and tours for youth and adults on a wide variety of natural history topics relevant to the Wildflower Garden
- Assist Garden Curator with development of program brochures, educational handouts, calendars, e-bulletin and other promotional materials
- Oversee development and care of educational tools and activities like adventure backpacks, touch and see table materials, and pop-up program materials
- Develop new curriculum and enhance existing curriculum for fun and engaging interpretive programs and activities for the Wildflower Garden
- Keep detailed records on a variety of program related information
- Perform key administrative tasks related to programs, patrons, staff and volunteers
- Assist Garden Curator to train and support naturalists to lead tours and interpretive programs for youth and adults
- Assist Garden Curator to develop program related social media platform posts and website information
- Assist with special projects, programs, and events
- Follow and diplomatically enforce MPRB rules and regulations
Work season & schedule: mid-March 2023 – late-October 2023. Part-time hours, typically 25-29 hours a week. Shifts generally scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm and Thursdays from 1pm-9pm. Required to work occasional weekends. Required attendance at staff meetings and trainings as scheduled each Thursday of each month from 1:00-2:30pm April 20-October 12 and Thursdays April 6 and April 13 from 1:00-4:30pm. Commitment to complete full Garden season is required.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with ability to follow written and oral instructions with attention to detail
- Knowledge of environmental education practices and principals
- Knowledge of and interest in MN flora and fauna and environmental science topics
- Work respectfully as a team member with MPRB staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors
- Communicate in a professional and friendly manner with the public
- Problem-solve, multi-task, and manage projects and time efficiently
- Follow directions, complete assignments, and meet deadlines on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent and college-level coursework in environmental education, education, environmental sciences, or related subjects
- Three or more months of interpretive or programming experience working at least 20 hours per week at a nature center, camp, zoo, arboretum or similar venue (other customer service experience will be considered)
- Demonstrated ability to work skillfully and respectfully with children, adults, and diverse populations through previous work and/or volunteer experiences
- Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and lead educational programs and activities
- Competency working with Windows Operating System including proficiency using Outlook, Word, Excel and Publisher
- Competency working with Facebook and Instagram social media platforms
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education, education, communications, environmental sciences, or a related field
- Graphic design and photography skills and experience
- Previous experience working as an interpretive naturalist or educator
- Fluency in a second language (including Dakota, Ojibwe, Spanish, Somali, Hmong, ASL)
Compensation: Starting $22.00 per hour. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance.
