Job Summary
Monday through Friday with some evenings and weekends based on when programs are scheduled
This position develops, coordinates, evaluates, and delivers programs for all audiences, with particular responsibility for in-person and virtual programs for K-12 school and early childhood audiences. The position will develop conservation and nature programming that serve a wide variety of stakeholders including but not limited to preK-12 school groups, toddlers, preschoolers, and families. It supports the Minnesota Zoo’s mission by providing value-added programming for field trip and early childhood audiences, as well developing paid opportunities to further enhance the experience.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Coordinate educational programs for K-12 students and teachers to ensure high quality, and effective educational experiences that support the Zoo’s mission, meet the Zoo’s education outcomes, align to state and national educational standards, and are relevant to diverse audiences.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of early childhood programs that are developmentally appropriate, engage families, create a sense of wonder, meet the Zoo’s education outcomes, and are relevant to diverse audiences.
- Coordinate programming logistical tasks so that deadlines are met, space and materials are available when needed, and programs run smoothly.
- Deliver programming according to agreed-upon protocols and best practices so that audiences are engaged, and educational outcomes are achieved.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Natural Interpretation, Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Wildlife Management or closely related,
- AND EITHER 3 years of experience developing and/or implementing environmental/nature, socio-cultural, historical, or closely related programs at a zoo, nature center, or aquarium for Pre-K-12 grade audiences
- OR 3 years of experience as a teacher in a formal educational setting teaching elementary science, biology, life science, or closely related course.
- Knowledge of conservation, wildlife biology, and sustainability issues
- Considerable knowledge of teaching practices and techniques, curriculum planning and development
- Demonstrated knowledge of and proven experience in environmental, experiential and/or outdoor learning theory and methodology
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and affirmative action principles
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse communities and/or organizations sufficient to maintain a work environment that respects and values differences and diversity
- Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate with a variety of stakeholders
- Effective teaching and presentation skills, practices, and processes
- Knowledge of children’s physical, emotional, and developmental patterns and needs and the ability to implement and share that knowledge.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and other Windows applications and video editing programs
- Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as being able to perform in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
- Ability to work with the public and resolve conflict
Preferred Qualifications
- Current teaching license or equivalent in early childhood, elementary, middle and/or high school
- Demonstrated knowledge of and proven experience in distance and/or virtual learning
- Significant experience working with diverse populations
- Experience with ambassador animal handling and/or training, including public engagement experiences and attention to animal welfare best practices
- Familiarity with early childhood pedagogy such as Emergent, Reggio, Inquiry Learning, Place-based, etc.
- Fluent in a language in addition to English such as Spanish, Hmong, ASL, etc.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and walk long distances on uneven terrain
- Ability to carry and use two-way portable radios to communicate with all zoo staff
- Flexible availability including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and overnights
