Join our team as a Paleontology Lab Manager (PLM) and help to support, maintain and guide day-to-day operations of the paleontology lab. The PLM will be responsible for managing and expanding the active core of paleontology volunteers at SMM. The PLM will also serve as the primary fossil preparator, working on material from a wide variety of preservation modes, and training volunteers in these methods. The PLM will also assist the Fitzpatrick Chair of Paleontology in outreach initiatives and assist in fieldwork.

Work Environment: Laboratory setting working with the paleontology curator and museum volunteers. Periodic outreach at Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM), but also within the community including local travel. Occasional fieldwork in variable outdoor conditions and potentially uncertain terrain.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Training existing and new volunteers in methods of fossil preparation and routinely overseeing progress made.
  • Fossil preparation by mechanical means, e.g. carbide picks, brushes, air scribes.
  • Managing the lab space by keeping equipment and material reasonably clean and well organized.
  • Assisting with fossil-related outreach events hosted at SMM and within the broader community.
  • Resupplying the lab with materials as needed and managing lab funds.
  • Documenting fossil preparation as needed.
  • Packing fossils and related material for outreach events.
  • Make storage cradles for large fossils using fiberglass and other traditional methods, as well as training volunteers to assist with this.
  • Generating molds and casts of fossil material.
  • Assist with fieldwork when opportunities arise and help coordinate the field crew.
  • Painting fossil casts and 3D prints for use in outreach including demonstrations, programs and exhibitions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in earth science, museum studies, or other related fields. Master’s degree valued but not required.
  • Proven and demonstrated experience preparing fossils and working with volunteers.
  • Proven and demonstrated experience in communicating paleontology to the public.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience working in museum paleontology labs and/or collections is valued but not required.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities.
  • Willingness to be open and respectful of all backgrounds.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English valued (Hmong, Somali, Spanish).

Hiring Pay Range: $38,897 – $40,000+ annually / Depending on Qualifications.
