Position Description: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is seeking three Environmental Educators to work in parks throughout Minneapolis doing the following:
- Lead nature-themed summer day camps for 7-11 year-olds
- Prepare and deliver fun, educational, hands-on, nature-based programming that promotes positive outdoor and recreational experiences for camp participants
- Prepare and deliver interactive outreach activities at community events, for all ages
- Complete administrative tasks as assigned
- Provide outstanding customer service to visitors
- Engage visitors to enhance their experience at the parks and promote positive outdoor experiences
- Other duties as assigned
Work Season and Hours: Tentative start date is June 11, with required paid training June 17-21st; final day is Sept 7, 2024. Camp runs Mon-Thurs; staff meet on Fridays to review the week and prep for the next. Work week is 28-35 hours. Hours typically fall on Mon-Fri between 7:30am and 5:30pm, but include one weekend program (Sept. 7).
Compensation: $18.00 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement. This position is eligible for sick and safe leave in accordance with the Minneapolis Sick and Safe Time Ordinance. This position is not eligible for other benefits.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to work well with children and diverse populations
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and public speaking skills
- Excellent customer service skills, a positive attitude, creativity, and adaptability
- Must be able to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
- Must be able to consistently arrive to programs prepared and on time
- Must be able to lift 30 lbs., hike uneven terrain, and teach effectively in all weather conditions
- Must have a driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle to haul program materials and drive between work assignment locations
Desired but Not Required:
- Interpretive or environmental education experience at a nature center, recreation center, or similar
- Working knowledge of Minnesota flora, fauna, and ecosystems
- Academic training in environmental education, ecology, natural history, or teaching
- Previous experience with program and curriculum development
- Demonstrated success teaching all ages (especially children) in an outdoor setting or classroom
- Ability to communicate fluently in a second language; Spanish, Hmong, or Somali preferred
