Job Description

Wage: $19.98 - $29.46 Hourly

Basic Function

This is a part time, permanent position, with the majority of work hours occurring during the academic school year from mid-August to mid-June (Mornings, Monday -Thursday and occasionally Friday, 15-20 hours/week). The position will work a reduced schedule or be on a seasonal break from mid-June to mid-August. The eligibility list created by this vacancy may be used to hire other vacancies in the department or County.

To develop, implement, conduct, and evaluate early childhood community environmental education and recreation programs at Tamarack Nature Center; to work cooperatively with Tamarack Nature Center partners including schools and community groups in the planning, implementation and evaluation of early childhood programs; and perform related duties as assigned.

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e. promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Examples of Work Performed

  1. Plan and conduct programs for Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and preschool classes conducted at Tamarack Nature Center on natural history and outdoor recreational topics; including preparation and cleanup after program delivery.
  2. Develop learning experiences and materials, employ effective teaching strategies while adhering to the program philosophy and vision.
  3. Facilitate learning experiences in a classroom and outdoor environment by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
  4. Create an inviting and safe classroom and outdoor environment that responds to the needs of individual learners.
  5. Assist in maintaining the Tamarack Nature Center's collections and inventory of program teaching supplies and recreation equipment.
  6. Actively participate in partnerships with area school districts and other community organizations to promote and enhance environmental education for young children.
  7. May conduct interactive and educational programs (such as hikes and tours) at the Nature Center for early childhood youth and families, and special groups such as scouts, homeschoolers, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens.
  8. Respond to questions from the public, relaying program information, explaining park rules, and helping with plant and animal identification and natural history topics.
  9. Contribute ideas and content for program curriculum, exhibits, and displays for the Tamarack Nature Center buildings, grounds, and trails.
  10. Provide early childhood training to Tamarack Nature Center education staff, volunteers and other support staff.

(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification.  Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Two years of post-secondary education concentrating in early childhood education, biology, ecology, environmental science, science education or a related field.

Experience:  One year (2080 hours) of experience developing or conducting developmentally appropriate environmental education and interpretive programs for children 2-6 years old.

Substitution:  None.

Certifications/Licensure:  None.

Preferred:  Experience teaching in an academic, early childhood classroom setting.
