Summer Zoo Camp Interpretive Naturalist Internship

This internship position exists to support summer Zoo Camps, which are fee-based, topical learning opportunities scheduled throughout the summer months.  All age groups, from preschool through high school may participate in Zoo Camps. These information education programs facilitate connections between participants, the environment and animals, and thus promote the Zoo’s conservation message. Zoo Camp Interns will assist with writing curriculum and teaching informal science education programs on environmental education topic areas.  They also will have the opportunity to observe, support, and may co-facilitate Zoo Camp programs under the supervision of interpretive naturalist staff.

Education, Summer Zoo Camp Internship Working Conditions:

  • Schedule:

o   Scheduled between 8:00 and 4:30 daily

o   24-32 hours/week, 12 weeks

o   Monday through Friday

  • Location:

o   Indoors and outdoors throughout the Zoo, depending on the topic of the Zoo Camp the intern is assigned to

o   Indoors

  • Activity Level:

o   Low to medium level of physical activity required, including walking indoors and outdoors; bending, crouching and stretching to support young children enrolled in Zoo Camps

o   Interns spend approximately half of their time seated at a desk developing and managing curriculum materials under direction from Zoo Education staff members

  • Animal Husbandry-Collection Interpretation work task distribution:

o   Interns in this work area do NOT engage in job tasks associate with animal husbandry (diet preparation, maintaining sanitary animal enclosures, etc.)

o   Interns interact with children and youth enrolled in summer Zoo Camp programs

o   Interns in this work area do not interpret exhibits for Zoo guests but may interact with guests while on the Zoo campus
