POSITION OBJECTIVE
Springbrook Nature Center is currently recruiting dynamic and energetic candidates to work as part of the interpretive leadership team. This full time position will be responsible for ensuring excellence in programming, public events, day-camps, and exhibits.
Springbrook has 127 acres of native prairies, forests and wetlands, which hosts up to 150,000 visitors each year and is a popular interpretive center and destination for many throughout the Twin Cities and region. This position is part of a team that is responsible for the resources and facilities of the Nature Center while providing more than 700 environmental education and nature interpretation programs throughout the year.
Expected Hiring Range: $31.69 - $33.81
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Plans, prepares, conducts, and evaluates environmental education programming for a variety of audiences on-site and off-site (preschool, homeschool, scout, adult, and family groups) and serves as coordinator to partner schools.
- Oversees the Springbrook summer day camp program through hiring and supervision of staff, development of camp curriculum and policies, and fostering a culture of positivity, inclusion and excellence.
- Curates exhibits and program animals including, but not limited to, training of animal care volunteers, enclosure design, purchasing animal supplies, and providing animal care through feeding and enclosure maintenance.
- Designs and coordinates implementation of Nature Center exhibits.
- Plans and implements community events with other Nature Center staff and volunteers.
- Assists with planning and scheduling facility rentals and community events.
- Coordinates and implements the volunteer program including recruitment, recognition, communication and training.
- Purchases program equipment and supplies, transports equipment, arranges for equipment maintenance, and maintains inventory.
- Assists in conducting special event programs.
- Participates in training, meetings and committees.
- Develops policies for individual programs based on state guidance and industry trends and assists in development of facilities reservation policies.
- Along with other staff, maintains the look and functionality of all public spaces including exhibits, classrooms and trails.
- Prepares and submits annual budget recommendations for interpretive/recreation programs, and controls program expenditures within approved budget.
- Prepares written reports and other documents, including promotional information, flyers, seasonal brochures, press releases, social media, and newspaper columns.
- Reviews and evaluates all activities and services, and submits recommendations for program improvement.
- Responds to inquiries by telephone, email and in person concerning a broad spectrum of natural resource information.
- Interacts with park and interpretive center guests.
- Processes program registrations and schedules groups and programs.
- Serves as a liaison to rental groups using the interpretive center.
- Promotes programs and services using print, online and social media.
- Purchases program equipment and supplies, transports equipment, arranges for equipment maintenance, and maintains inventory.
- Participates in training, meetings and committees.
- Other duties as assigned or apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Education, Natural Science or related field; and
- Two years’ relevant work experience; OR
- Equivalent combination of education/training/experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience and comfort with handling and caring for live animals.
- Experience in leadership or supervision of staff and/or volunteers.
- Experience with outdoor recreation based programming (archery, bicycling, canoeing, etc.)
- Comfortable using hand tools and performing outdoor work such as trail maintenance and habitat management.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to engage with park visitors.
- High level of motivation to serve the public.
- Experience working with people from a diverse range of cultural, economic and social backgrounds in an educational setting
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing group, social and recreational programs and activities for various age groups.
- Knowledge of basic budgeting theories and principles.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of employee supervision, including work planning, assignment, and review and the training of staff in work procedures. Ability to plan, organize, and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to be creative and innovative in programming and marketing of recreation programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and possess positive customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize work.
- Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and positively in a team environment.
- Ability to work varying hours and days to accommodate activity schedules.
- Ability to administer operating rules and procedures under management guidance.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution.
- Must act in a decisive manner, exercise good judgment, and deal with stressful situations, while maintaining flexibility to support and carry out directives.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other professionals, co-workers, and the public, using tact and diplomacy.

- Ability to represent the City to other agencies and the public with a courteous, accurate, and businesslike attitude in all types of contact.
- Understanding of environmental and natural sciences systems and a basic understanding of human behavior and diverse cultures.
- Ability to apply methods, techniques and implementation of program development as well as youth and public education.
